    Frequently asked questions

  • What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?

The three prominent things would be knee pain, shoulder pain and back pain. If I talk about knee pain, some people present with acute knee trauma, but more often than not, it's a chronic, insidious onset knee pain, which can get worse with activity, sometimes swelling, locking of the knees, giving way of the knees as well. Majority of them would be not elite sports people, but active people who have developed knee pain through increased running or other activities.

  • What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?

If we continue with knee pain and we take anterior knee pain, for example, if I thought that a diagnostic ultrasound scan was the right investigation, I would do that on the same day and in the same appointment. Perhaps someone's got a patellar tendinitis or a quadriceps tendon issue or something along those lines, we will do the scan in clinic. Sometimes, a few of them might need to go and have an MRI as well, which we would arrange a different unit. Sometimes, they don't need diagnostic ultrasound and they'll go straight to an x-ray or an MRI scan. It just depends on the presentation.

That would go for shoulder pain as well. The idea is, where appropriate, I can provide a one-stop shop, so they can have everything done in the same place.

  • What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?

I'm interested in normal musculoskeletal issues, but I'm particularly interested in diagnostic ultrasound scanning with guided injections and treatments which I do in the clinic. In terms of body region, knee pain and shoulder pain have become my main areas of interest, particularly knee pain, including osteoarthritis of the knee joint and how we manage that non-surgically when it's appropriate and, obviously, referral on to surgical colleagues when it's required.
