About Prof. George Ikkos

Professor George Ikkos has more than two decades of experience in psychiatry. His special areas of interest are mental health conditions, anxiety, mood related disorders, psychological medicine, psychosomatics and pain, and mental health problems of young adults. He has also trained hundreds of psychiatrists and has received personal praise by the London Deanery for his leadership in medical education. He has co-authored the current European Psychiatric Association Guidance on Roles and Responsibilities of Psychiatrists. In 2014, he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which is the highest honour bestowed by the college.
After studying Psychology and Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto, Canada, Professor Ikkos trained in Medicine and Psychiatry at the Middlesex and University College Hospitals London medical schools. He qualified in Psychotherapy at the Institute of Group Analysis London and is also a Member of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management. In addition to clinical work, teaching and research, he prepares medico-legal and occupational mental health reports.
Born in Sweden and raised in Greece, Professor Ikkos studied in Canada and then worked in Scotland and England. His wide cultural perspective has helped him strengthen and diversify his clinical experience.
Professor Ikkos is the Treasurer of the Association of Clinical Professors of Psychiatry and Director of ‘Psychiatry in Dialogue with Neuroscience Medicine and Society’ programme at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Psychiatry Section. He has previously held positions as Honorary Visiting Research Professor London South Bank University, Honorary Research Associate University College London Clinical Health and Education Psychology, Honorary Clinical Lecturer Middlesex Hospital Medical School, and President, Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) for the sections of Psychiatry (2012-13) and Pain Medicine (2010-11). He has also served in the position of the Director of Medical Education at Barnet Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust till June 2014. He has 30 peer reviewed professional publications on various aspects of organisation and quality in mental health services.
