About Dr Brian Clapp
GMC number: 4105291
Year qualified: 1994
Place of primary qualification: University of London
Dr Brian Clapp is a highly regarded consultant cardiologist who specialises in both general cardiology and interventional and structural cardiology. Dr Clapp works within The Cardiac Clinic team based at London Bridge Hospital. In addition, he provides private care as a consultant cardiologist and senior lecturer at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Clapp has extensive experience and skill in all aspects of coronary intervention (angioplasty). His expertise includes the assessment and closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale, including for cryptogenic strokes. He is also passionate about cardiac diving medicine and is recognised on the Health and Safety Executive Register as a secondary specialist with an interest in diving.
After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1991, followed by a medical degree with distinctions from University College London in 1994, Dr Clapp went on to complete extensive training in a number of teaching hospitals around London. He achieved a PhD from the University of London thanks to a British Heart Foundation Fellowship, during which his research focus was on the association between inflammation and acute coronary events. In 2005, Dr Clapp completed his specialist cardiology training with a significant focus on coronary and structural intervention.
Dr Clapp's areas of expertise include coronary intervention, structural heart disease, atrial septal defect closure, patent foramen ovale closure, and cardiac diving medicine. He treats a wide range of conditions, including coronary artery disease, structural heart defects, and cryptogenic strokes. Dr Clapp has been a consultant cardiologist since 2005 and continues to contribute significantly to both clinical practice and medical education.

Frequently asked questions
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
I see a wide range of cardiac patients. They generally present with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations or, alternatively, worry about some previous investigation they've had.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I carry out a full range of cardiac treatments, both myself and with colleagues. I'm an interventional cardiologist. I have a particular ability to deal with coronary artery disease, both in terms of investigation and treatment, and also a number of structural abnormalities including stroke prevention techniques.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
I'm an interventional cardiologist who can carry out all types of coronary intervention, including radio ablation. From a structural perspective, my interests are fundamentally in those of the reduction of stroke risk. So, the closure of patent foramen ovale, closure of left atrial appendages to reduce stroke risk in specific patients. I also have an interest in other forms of atrial septal defects.
Arching all of this, I have an interest in diving medicine and the interaction between diving physiology and the safety of diving.
