About Dr James Mackay

Year qualified: 1983
Place of primary qualification: University of Edinburgh
Dr James Mackay is the only accredited consultant clinical genetic oncologist with a special interest in cancer genetics in the UK. His clinical interests include cancer genetics, inherited cancer, cancer screening, and the introduction of complex genetic tests into clinical cancer care.
Dr Mackay established regional cancer genetics services in East Anglia and North East Thames. He also developed a remote cancer genetics service using real-time tele-conferencing technology, based at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr Mackay is an honorary senior lecturer in the Research Department of Oncology at The Cancer Institute, University College London. He was the clinical principal investigator of an evaluation of regular mammography in women under 50 with a family history of breast cancer, funded by the NHS Research and Development Programme. The results of this study have now been published. Furthermore, he initiated the Genetic Breast Cancer Trial, the first randomised trial of chemotherapy based on inherited genetic make-up in the world, focusing on women with breast cancer who carry a faulty breast cancer gene.
Dr Mackay's expertise encompasses a range of diseases, medical tests, and treatments, including BRCA testing, inherited genetic panel testing, and the use of somatic genetic tests to provide further prognostic information. He is also highly experienced in cancer genetics, family history clinics, and assessing family cancer risk.
Dr Mackay has been dedicated to advancing the field of cancer genetics since his appointment and continues to contribute significantly to both clinical practice and research.
