Mr Shankar is one of London’s leading general surgeons and currently serves as the Medical Director at HCA UK's Lister Hospital. He previously held the position of Divisional Clinical Director of Gastrointestinal Services at University College London Hospitals.

Mr Shankar's private practice locations within HCA UK include The Harley Street Clinic, The Wellington Hospital, and HCA UK at University College Hospital. His NHS base is at University College and the Royal Free Hospitals. He received his surgical training in London, primarily at The Middlesex, University College, and Hammersmith Hospitals. He was awarded an MD for his research into the development of colorectal liver metastases.

Mr Shankar works in one of the largest Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) units in the UK. His clinical interests include benign HPB conditions, particularly acute and chronic pancreatitis, complex gallstone-related conditions, emergency surgery, and duodenal polyposis. He also leads the Abdominal Sarcoma Unit, which is part of the London Sarcoma Service at University College Hospital. Additionally, he runs the Hernia Clinic, offering both open and laparoscopic techniques, with a particular interest in managing complex recurrences and complications.

Mr Shankar is highly skilled in a range of procedures and treatments, including laparoscopic surgery, upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, and the management of conditions such as pancreatitis, hernias, sarcomas, gallstones, and abdominal pain. He has been a key figure in his field since his appointment and continues to contribute significantly to both his NHS and private practices.
