About Mr Parag Jaiswal
GMC number: 6030895
Year qualified: 2001
Place of primary qualification: King's College London
Mr Parag Jaiswal is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust. He has been a doctor for 19 years and has been in orthopaedics for 15 of those. His areas of interest are hip replacement, including minimally invasive hip replacement, knee replacement, including minimally invasive knee replacement, hip arthroscopy, hip impingement surgery, hip labral tear, knee arthroscopy, meniscal tear, ankle fracture, hip fracture, wrist fracture, forearm fracture, knee fracture, tibia fracture and femur fracture. He offers a range of implants and uses different materials according to a patient’s needs and requirements. He also has a busy private practice.
Mr Jaiswal graduated from Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Medical School in 2001. After completing basic surgical training at Guy’s and The Royal London Teaching Hospitals, he undertook his orthopaedic training on the prestigious Stanmore rotation. After completing his surgical training and thesis on cartilage damage, he was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association Soli Lam Travelling Fellowship, which facilitated his travel to Calgary, Canada, to undertake the joint reconstruction and young adult hip fellowships and complex trauma. He gained valuable experience during his second fellowship at Frimley Park Hospital which further enhanced his hip and knee surgery skills.
During his consultant post at Guy’s & St. Thomas’s NHS Trust, Mr Jaiswal was awarded the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship, which led him to be trained by one of the world’s leading and pioneering hip Arthroscopists, Marc Philippon in Vail, USA. This made him able to offer the state-of-the-art-hip arthroscopy techniques to treat hip impingement and hip labral tears to patients suffering from hip and groin pain.
Mr Jaiswal spends a great deal of time in research to keep himself on the cutting edge of innovations in his areas of interest. After completing his thesis, he has continued performing high-quality research resulting in numerous prizes. This allows him to offer novel treatments (if appropriate) that are not readily available. He also maintains a great network of colleagues with research interest that allows him to discuss his patients’ difficult and challenging problems and come up with innovative but safe treatment plans.
Mr Jaiswal loves theatre, skiing, hiking, biking and mountain climbing. He also enjoys other sports such as cricket and badminton. His passion for outdoor sports helps him better understand the importance of getting back to the physical activities you enjoy.

Frequently asked questions
Why do you do what you do?
I genuinely love being a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. This is because I am in the privileged position of making a real and meaningful impact in improving the quality of life of the patients I see. It is always very pleasing to see patients post-operatively regain their independence or return to the physical activities they enjoy.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
There are two pain patient groups I see with hip and knee problems. The older age group present with pain and stiffness from their arthritic joints. Younger patients with hip and groin problem typically have hip impingement and/or labral tears. This can occur after a specific sporting incident or come about gradually. Sporting knee problem can manifest itself with anterior (in the front) knee pain or pain on the side as a result of tendon problems. Pain deep inside the knee after an injury is something I see quite commonly too.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I always endeavour to exhaust non-operative treatments where appropriate. If surgery is required, I discuss joint preserving procedures if indicated. As a result of completing 2 international fellowships, I am able to offer the latest techniques in hip and knee arthroscopy (key-hole surgery) and minimally invasive hip and knee replacements. Furthermore, I perform revision (re-do) hip replacements that have failed or are failing/worn out. I use the most advanced, state of the art implants to facilitate improved long-term outcomes for my patients. After completing a thesis on cartilage injuries, I have a keen interest in treating cartilage problems in the hip and knee and can offer innovative treatments as a result of trials I am involved in. Having worked in three major trauma centres (including a fellowship in an AO approved level 1 Trauma Centre in North America), I am very enthusiastic about managing patient with complex trauma in the hip, knee and ankle. I regularly give second opinions.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
Much of that has been discussed above. My other areas of interest include young adults with hip pain and knee injuries/pain.
