Frequently asked questions
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
The most common thing that I do is reconstruction after a breast cancer – ladies with breast cancer that are looking at having a mastectomy.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
The bulk of what I do is, obviously, breast surgery. I offer reconstruction without using implants. It's the main procedure that I do. I also do a lot of symmetrisation if she's had breast cancer or a breast lump and been left in breast asymmetry. I do a lot of nipple reconstruction.
I do congenital breast deformities if you're born with one breast that is not the same size as the other. I can either enlarge that for you or reduce the other side or uplift to improve the symmetry of the breast.
With regard to gender surgery, I do a lot of breast surgery for transgender people (for women who want to be men and for men who want to be women). I can either masculine a chest or, obviously, use breast implants on trans women.
Another one of my specialties is lower limb trauma. I work for King's Major Trauma Centre and I do all their limb reconstruction. It's mainly conjoined orthopaedic problems. If there's any skin problems arising from any sort of orthopaedic intervention, I deal with them – from resurfacing to scar relief to tendon transfers, et cetera.
I do cosmetic procedures. I do do cosmetic breast surgery, if you want to be larger or smaller. I do do tummy tucks because it's a big part of what I do. When I reconstruct breasts, I use abdominal tissue and, sometimes, thigh and buttock tissue to make breasts. I have a lot of experience with abdominoplasty-type procedures.
Finally, it would be more minor benign skin lesions, such as moles, skin tags and the like.
These would comprise the bulk of my practice.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My main subspecialist interest is microsurgery. It's where I did all my training in. It's something that I do in the NHS at least two, if not three, times a week. It's where the breast reconstruction comes from and the limb reconstruction comes from, but I do get asked to deal with any big deformity.
