Year qualified: 1995
Place of primary qualification: University of London
Dr Sean Preston is the Medical Director at The Princess Grace Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK. He graduated from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, Paddington, in 1995. Most of his postgraduate training was centred at Barts and The London NHS Trust, a major London teaching hospital, with an additional year spent in Sydney as an Advanced Endoscopy Fellow. He was appointed as a Consultant at Barts in 2006.
Dr Preston's clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), Barrett's oesophagus, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhoea, constipation, and bloating. He is skilled in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of the oesophagus, stomach, and colon. He has a keen interest in gut health and gastrointestinal microbiota, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and uses diet, prebiotics, and probiotics to achieve and maintain optimal bowel conditions. His clinical consultations are structured to allow patients sufficient time to explain their symptoms and fully understand the causes of their concerns.
Dr Preston completed his PhD at Cancer Research UK, London, where he studied the role of stem cells in gastrointestinal cancers, leading to several significant publications in the field. He is the Director of Endoscopy at Barts Health, with expertise in gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound. He is also an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, which requires a rigorous accreditation process and continual audit of key performance indicators. He has authored numerous key papers and book chapters on gastrointestinal cancer and continues his research in Barrett's oesophagus.
In 2013, Dr Preston was featured in the Tatler Doctors Guide of Britain's top 250 consultants. He served as President of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine from 2015 to 2017 and is currently the Chairman of the Specialists' Committee for the Independent Doctors' Federation.
As a founding partner of London Digestive Health within the London Digestive Centre, Dr Preston works within a first-class clinical team of other London teaching hospital gastroenterologists, GI surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, and a dietician. He is also the Chair of the Digestive Diseases and Renal Department at HCA Healthcare UK.
Dr Preston's dedication to patient care and his extensive expertise in gastroenterology make him a leading specialist in his field.

Frequently asked questions
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
The most common symptoms my patients have are abdominal pain, bloating and heartburn. These can signify serious underlying disease, but can equally be very straightforward problems to solve.
The gastrointestinal tract has the potential to cause many varied symptoms, so it's important to identify the cause as soon as possible.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
The treatment is very pathology and patient-specific and it's very important to treat any underlying problems in a holistic manner. These can either be with lifestyle changes, medications, complex endoscopic therapies, dietary manipulation or hypnotherapy. I'm lucky enough to work in a group that can provide all of these.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My main areas of subspecialist interests are endoscopic, both the diagnosis and treatment of pre-malignant and cancerous pathology in the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas and colon.
