Frequently asked questions
Why do you do what you do?
As a medical student, I was particularly drawn to areas with strong research potential. Respiratory medicine offered both academic opportunities and the ability to make a profound difference to breathless patients. Sleep medicine intrigued me because it was a developing field when I started in the early 2000s. I realised early on how under-recognised and under-treated sleep apnoea was. I started working privately because the long NHS waiting lists frustrated me. Private practice enables me to see patients quickly, request appropriate tests, and start treatments without delay—ultimately providing faster relief to patients.
What are the common symptoms that your patients tend to present with?
For respiratory cases, the most common symptoms are breathlessness—either sudden or gradual—and persistent cough, which has become increasingly prevalent post-COVID. I also see many patients with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis who are seeking better management. In sleep medicine, patients often present because their partner is concerned about loud snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep. Others come due to excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue.
What are the treatments that you're able to offer your patients?
I can offer a full range of diagnostics including lung function tests, CT scans, blood tests, and allergy screens. For sleep disorders, I can arrange home-based sleep studies, in-lab nocturnal polysomnography, and EEG monitoring. I also offer treatment with CPAP and BiPAP machines for conditions like sleep apnoea and obesity-related respiratory failure. For respiratory conditions, I provide medication plans, inhalers, antibiotics, or immunomodulators, depending on the diagnosis.
What are your areas of sub-specialist interest?
My sub-specialist focus is on respiratory support for patients with chronic respiratory failure, including those with neuromuscular conditions like motor neurone disease. I manage long-term non-invasive ventilation and am particularly experienced in supporting patients with CPAP and BiPAP, whether for sleep apnoea or other respiratory issues such as obesity hypoventilation.
