    About Miss Joanna Franks

    GMC number: 4631396

    Year qualified: 1999

Place of primary qualification: University of London

Miss Joanna Franks is a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in breast and oncoplastic surgery, for which she treats all malignant and benign breast conditions. She has a keen interest in the early detection of breast cancer, mastectomy, breast conservation, and breast cancer screening. She sees private patients at the Wellington Hospital.

Miss Franks earned her primary medical qualification from Imperial College London, after which she completed pathology research funded by the Medical Research Council. She then went on to undertake her Higher Surgical Training with the London Deanery, at the Oncoplastic Breast Unit at University College London Hospitals and the Macmillan Cancer Centre. In addition to her training, Miss Franks also earned her Master’s Degree in Medical Education, which has since allowed her to set standards for renowned London Medical Schools such as the Royal Free Medical School and UCLH medical school and also work as a Medical Assessor for the General Medical Council.

Miss Franks has also become a trustee for the Future of Dreams Organisation, responsible for raising awareness, support, and funds for breast cancer patients. She was also a Pan London Breast Hub Co-ordinator as part of the COVID-19 response, ensuring breast cancer patients were still taken care of during the pandemic.

Miss Franks provides medical advisory services for HCA's Wellington Hospital. In this role, she leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the hospital leadership team to assist the hospital by providing medical advice and promoting high-quality, cost-effective care in respect of breast and oncoplastic matters. In particular, she leads the Hospital’s Breast Tumour Board and supports the Hospital’s Medical Governance lead, including in respect of the development and growth of the breast unit. Additionally, she advises Hospital leadership on consultant matters, medical issues and other relevant items, including in relation to the development of surgical services and pre-operative pathways.
