Professor James Lindsay is a distinguished Professor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and a Consultant Gastroenterologist. He studied medicine at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford, qualifying in 1993. He furthered his expertise by completing a PhD in mucosal immunology at Imperial College London. His NHS base is Barts Health NHS Trust, and he also holds an academic position at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.
Professor Lindsay leads the adolescent and adult IBD service at The Royal London Hospital, working alongside a full multidisciplinary team. He also runs a private clinic at the London Digestive Centre. His procedural expertise includes performing endoscopy and colonoscopy at the Princess Grace Hospital, and he is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist.
In addition to his clinical roles, Professor Lindsay has made significant contributions to the field of gastroenterology through his involvement with various professional organisations. He is a past Education Officer and Governing Board Member of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and has chaired working groups for the ECCO consensus on the management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. He currently serves as the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) national societies representative to United European Gastroenterology and is a member of the International Organisation of IBD (IOIBD).
Professor Lindsay is actively involved in clinical research, serving on the BSG IBD Clinical Trials Steering Group and acting as Chief Investigator for numerous investigator-led and commercial clinical trials in IBD. He also leads a program of translational science research, aiming to bridge the gap between laboratory findings and clinical practice.
His areas of expertise include general gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. He is proficient in performing medical tests and treatments such as gastroscopy (OGD), colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and endoscopy.
