Mr James Gossage is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He specialises in cancer of the oesophagus and stomach, as well as benign diseases of the upper digestive tract. After completing his medical degree from the University of London, he was awarded a laparoscopic surgical fellowship and a HCA Foundation grant to study surgical techniques in Adelaide, Australia. He also received a research grant from the Royal College of Surgeons and was awarded a Hunterian Professorship for his work.
Mr Gossage has specialist expertise in oesophageal and gastric cancer, as well as keyhole surgery for conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux, achalasia, GIST tumours, and hiatus hernias. He performs a wide range of general surgical and day case procedures, including laparoscopic hernia repair, complex incisional hernia repairs, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Actively involved in research and education, Mr Gossage is an affiliated researcher with the Upper Gastrointestinal Research Unit at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and a Senior Lecturer at Kings College, London. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, two book chapters, and a textbook on surgery. His commitment to advancing medical knowledge and training the next generation of surgeons is evident in his extensive academic contributions.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Mr Gossage provides medical advisory services for HCA's London Bridge Hospital. He leads interactions with hospital medical staff and the leadership team to promote high-quality, cost-effective care. His advisory role includes contributing to the strategy, policies, and decision-making regarding Upper Gastrointestinal Services, including robotics.
