Mr Jahangir (Jay) Ahmed is an experienced and highly regarded consultant in ENT, specialising in Head & Neck, Laryngology, and Thyroid surgery at Barts-Health and UCLH NHS trusts. He is the current lead clinician for ENT at The Royal London Hospital and a core member of the regional head and neck cancer and Thyroid MDTs.
Mr Ahmed was educated at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating in 2001 with the Gold medal in Pathology. He also attained an MA in experimental psychology from Cambridge. He was awarded a PhD in molecular oncology in 2015 for his work at The Barts Cancer Institute on harnessing viruses for immuno-therapy of cancer.
He completed higher surgical ENT training in London teaching hospitals, including The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s, Charing Cross, The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear, and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. These are internationally recognised centres of excellence and academia, where he gained quality experience in the breadth and depth of ENT.
Mr Ahmed has a high-volume practice and expertise in the surgical management of head and neck tumours from all subsites, including tonsil, tongue, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), salivary gland, and thyroid. He is one of the core thyroid surgeons in the Barts Health Thyroid Multidisciplinary team (MDT), one of the largest thyroid cancer groups in the UK. He is one of the few surgeons on the panel designated to perform neck dissection in thyroid cancer patients with advanced disease.
Mr Ahmed is skilled in transoral (scarless, through-the-mouth) laser and robotic surgery, with one of the highest-volume transoral robotic surgical practices in the UK. He has significant experience in managing voice, complex airway, and swallowing problems. Uniquely, he runs a tertiary level practice in the surgical management of sleep disordered breathing, ranging from snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) refractory to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
