    About Prof. George Hanna

    Prof. George Hanna is a consultant surgeon based at St Mary's Hospital, part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He specialises in oesophageal and gastric cancer, as well as advanced laparoscopic surgery.

    Prof. Hanna completed his laparoscopic and oesophago-gastric surgery training at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and obtained a Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Dundee in 1997 for his research into the ergonomics of laparoscopic surgery. In 2003, he was appointed a clinical senior lecturer and upper gastrointestinal consultant surgeon at Imperial College and was promoted to professor of surgical sciences in 2008.

    Prof. Hanna is actively involved in clinical research into volatile organic compound analysis for biomarker discovery, as well as understanding the molecular drivers of volatile compounds in an attempt to develop non-invasive breath tests to diagnose gastrointestinal cancer. He is the lead for the NIHR programme for point-of-care diagnostics in cancer and gastrointestinal diseases. In terms of his educational research, he aims to develop competency assessment tools for training and quality assurance of surgical performance in randomised controlled trials.
