Mr Barry Andrews is a Consultant Knee and Trauma Surgeon. His NHS base is at King’s College Hospital London. His special interests are in sports knee injuries, knee preservation surgery and knee realignment. He is a specialist complex orthopaedic trauma surgeon for periprosthetic fractures around knee replacements. He is an expert in high tibial osteotomy, distal femoral osteotomy, knee osteotomy, combined ACL reconstruction and osteotomy, posterolateral corner knee reconstruction, medial collateral ligament surgery, cartilage lesions, meniscal problems, paediatric ACL reconstruction, knee preservation surgery and multi-ligament knee injuries.
Mr Andrews graduated in medicine from the University of Sheffield Medical School, where he also completed early surgical training. He then joined the reputed Percival Pott orthopaedic training rotation in London which included specialist knee and trauma training at St. Bartholomews, The Royal London, and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He joined the UK Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2015.
Mr Andrews, a committed researcher, was awarded the NIHR “Greenshoots” prize for new researchers in 2019. He is the Principal Investigator for the ACL SNNAP trial at King’s. He has 16 International Presentations, including a prize-winning work on partial knee replacement, and 19 National Presentations. He is also a dedicated trainer for the next generation. He runs the knee surgery simulation courses at King’s, lectures to the FRCS knee and trauma trainees, and is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor.
Mr Andrews bases his work on data-based evidence. Aside from using the UK National Ligament Registry (UKNLR), the UK Osteotomy Registry (UKKOR), the UK Joint Registry (UKNJR), he collects his own outcome data for arthroplasty and multi-ligament knee surgery. He is a member of AO Trauma, British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), European Society of Sports Traumatology and Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA).
