Dr Barbara McGowan is a highly esteemed Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, a position she has held since 2009. She graduated in Biochemistry from Oxford in 1988 and initially worked as a Pharmaceutical Equity Analyst in the City for five years. She then pursued Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London, graduating in 1998 with Merits. Dr McGowan was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2007 for her groundbreaking research on the role of gut hormones and neuropeptides in appetite control.
Dr McGowan's areas of expertise encompass a broad spectrum of endocrinological conditions, including thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypogonadism, adrenal disease, pituitary disorders, metabolic disorders, and hormone imbalances. She has a particular interest in managing complex obesity and the co-morbidities associated with Type 2 Diabetes and metabolic syndrome. As the lead of the obesity bariatric service at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, she plays a pivotal role in advancing patient care in this field. Additionally, she serves as a general medicine physician.
In her professional roles, Dr McGowan is an active Trustee of the Association for the Study of Obesity and a SCOPE National Fellow. She also holds significant positions as the Metabolic and Obesity Endocrine Network Lead for the Society of Endocrinology and Treasurer for the Society for Endocrinology. Furthermore, she contributes her expertise as a member of the RCP Nutrition Committee and the RCP Committee on Weight and Health.
