Dr Ayesha Akbar is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at St Mark's Hospital. She qualified from the University of Manchester with honours and undertook her specialist training in gastroenterology in London. Dr Akbar obtained her PhD degree from Imperial College London, where she studied the molecular mechanisms of visceral hypersensitivity in the colon. Since her appointment, she has received numerous prestigious awards for her work and holds several management roles.

Dr Akbar offers comprehensive management of all general gastrointestinal pathologies. Her primary focus is on inflammatory bowel disease, with a particular interest in abdominal pain and irritable bowel syndrome. She sub-specialises in neurogastroenterology and is an active member of the British Society of Gastroenterology Neurogastroenterology committee.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Akbar is deeply involved in research, education, and training. She has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She serves as the national Education Chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology and is the Research and Development Director for London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Akbar is proficient in a range of medical tests and treatments, including endoscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy. She treats a variety of conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, reflux, bloating, and polyps.
