About Dr Vinay Sehgal
GMC number: 6163659
Dr Vinay Sehgal is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist at University College London Hospital. He completed his specialist training in Gastroenterology in the prestigious North East London rotation and earned his PhD at University College London. His research has led to numerous awards, particularly in the field of oesophageal cancer.
Dr Sehgal specialises in the early detection and treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and offers minimally invasive endoscopic treatments, including the STRETTA procedure. He is one of only two specialists in the UK providing endoscopic hiatus hernia repair using the trans-oral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) procedure.
He has a super-specialist interest in pre-cancerous conditions of the digestive tract, such as Barrett's Oesophagus and Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Dr Sehgal has co-authored landmark studies on treatments for early oesophageal cancer, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
Dr Sehgal also treats advanced oesophageal and gastric cancer, offering laser therapy and stent placement to improve symptoms and quality of life. His expertise extends to advanced endoscopic therapy for benign foregut disorders, including achalasia and eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE).
In addition to his work on foregut diseases, Dr Sehgal performs colonoscopies, commonly removing pre-cancerous polyps and diagnosing inflammatory bowel conditions. His research focuses on novel endoscopic imaging technologies and minimally invasive techniques for early cancer detection and treatment. He is actively involved in national and international clinical studies and regularly presents at international meetings.
