Dr Sara Trompeter is a consultant haematologist and paediatric haematologist at University College Hospitals London (UCLH) and NHS Blood and Transplant. She has a special interest in haemoglobin disorders such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, iron disorders including overload and deficiency, G6PD deficiency, hereditary spherocytosis, and other red cell disorders.

Dr Trompeter graduated from the University of Bristol in 1997 with degrees in Medicine (MBChB) and Psychology (BSc). She was awarded MRCPCH by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 1999, FRCPath by the Royal College of Pathology in 2007, and an MSc from the University of Oxford in 2017.

Appointed as a consultant haematologist at NHS Blood and Transplant and UCLH in 2011, Dr Trompeter is the lead for paediatric haematology and a core member of the adult service. She previously chaired the Joint Red Cell Unit Haemoglobinopathy Network, which includes hospitals such as UCLH, Whittington Health, Royal Free Hospital, Royal Free Hospital Barnet Branch, and Luton and Dunstable Hospital. In this role, she successfully led the trust through the 2012 Peer Review Process.

Dr Trompeter has been instrumental in developing the automated exchange service at UCLH, making it the largest in Europe. She also serves as the NHS Blood and Transplant Representative on the Clinical Reference Group for Haemoglobinopathies.

In addition to her clinical roles, Dr Trompeter leads the paediatric red cell research programme at UCLH. She is actively involved in and spearheading research into the appropriate use of transfusion in red cell disorders.

Dr Trompeter treats a range of conditions including sickle cell disease, thalassaemia, iron overload, iron deficiency, G6PD deficiency, hereditary spherocytosis, and other red blood cell disorders.
