Mr Richard Sainsbury is a Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon with over 40 years of experience in the NHS. He has most recently served at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Primary Care Trust. Currently, he works exclusively in the private sector at several locations, including The Harley Street Clinic.
Mr Sainsbury is highly trained in all aspects of breast disease, including reduction and augmentation. He was a key proponent of Sentinel node biopsy when it was introduced in the 1990s. He qualified in 1977 from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and earned an MD with distinction in 1986.
Throughout his career, Mr Sainsbury has held several prestigious positions. He worked as a Consultant Surgeon in Huddersfield for 12 years and later joined the Royal Free and University College Medical School. There, he served as Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Honorary Consultant Surgeon, eventually becoming the Head of Breast Services at UCH in 2007 before moving to Southampton and IoW.
Mr Sainsbury continues to maintain an active research programme at UCL, focusing on the mechanisms of breast cancer. He has advised government bodies on optimising breast services and has authored several books and over 200 scientific papers on breast cancer. His research interests include cell cycle control mechanisms, delay and outcome, and Echotherapy for benign breast lesions.
