Mr Rhidian Thomas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital. He has a special interest in foot surgery, knee and ankle injuries, ligament reconstruction, sports injuries, overuse injuries, and arthroscopic surgery. Mr Thomas completed his undergraduate training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and achieved a BSc from St. Mary's Hospital. His orthopaedic training was in West London, and he undertook a British Orthopaedic Sports Association Travelling Fellowship at Duke University, USA.
Mr Thomas has an interest in research and has published and presented at both national and international meetings, including being invited as a keynote speaker. He holds a higher Master of Surgery degree (MS) in knee ligament reconstruction. As part of the recognition for his work, he is a member of the highly prestigious International Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Study Group, made up of leaders in the field from all over the world.
He has been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon for some 20 years at Imperial College NHS Healthcare in London. In addition to training future orthopaedic surgeons, he has been involved with training sports physicians in the London Deanery since the beginning of this speciality and was one of the first Foundation Fellows in Sports and Exercise Medicine (FFSEM UK).
Mr Thomas has a subspecialist interest in the management of lower limb sports injuries. He has been involved in treating professional athletes in many different types of sports but also treats amateur athletes of all ages, including those in their early teens. He was one of the Medical Team Leaders in the London 2012 Olympics and has been one of the match day Orthopaedic Surgeons for the English RFU for nearly 20 years, including the 2015 World Rugby Cup final.
His expertise includes the management of shin splints such as chronic exertional compartment syndrome, arthroscopic ankle surgery, management of overuse tendon injuries, and acute and chronic repair of Achilles and patella tendons. He also specialises in articular cartilage preservation surgery for the knee and ankle.
