Mr Manish Desai is a distinguished consultant in Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust, Stanmore. He joined the hospital in June 2012, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the field of spinal cord injuries and trauma rehabilitation. Mr Desai's areas of expertise include the rehabilitation of complex traumatic and non-traumatic spinal injuries, management of spasticity, neuropathic pain, and musculoskeletal interventions.
Mr Desai completed his medical studies at the Government Medical College in Baroda, India, earning a postgraduate degree in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 1995. He worked as an Orthopaedic consultant in India until 2004, focusing on trauma, bone infections, and degenerative spine diseases. He then furthered his training in the UK, obtaining a National Training Number in Rehabilitation Medicine from 2007 to 2011 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
In his current role, Mr Desai is dedicated to providing holistic, multidisciplinary, and patient-centred care. He has successfully developed a regional specialist spinal rehabilitation service for conditions such as Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression and Cauda Equina Syndrome. His routine work involves procedures like Botulinum Toxin injections, Intrathecal Baclofen drug delivery, nerve blocks, and joint injections.
Mr Desai's commitment to medical education and healthcare was recognised with the award of the FRCP degree by the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 2017. He is also actively involved in academic and research work, presenting at various national and international conferences. His interests include the management of osteoporosis and the use of exoskeletons for robotic walking in spinal cord injured patients.
