Dr Khurum Khan is a distinguished consultant in medical oncology, specialising in gastrointestinal cancers. He is currently based at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and also attends North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH). Dr Khan has been the Clinical Lead of Carcinoma of Unknown Primary (CUP) and Clinical Research in Oncology at NMUH since his appointment in 2013.
Dr Khan's areas of expertise include colorectal, colon, rectal, anal, upper GI, gastric, oesophageal, hepato-biliary, cholangiocarcinoma, gall bladder, and pancreatic cancers. He is particularly interested in the stratification of therapies for gastrointestinal malignancies and has been involved in setting up numerous clinical and translational studies.
He completed his training in medical oncology at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London. Dr Khan was awarded the Robert McAlpine fellowship and earned an MD(Res) degree under the supervision of Professor David Cunningham. His research focused on the mechanisms of response and resistance to targeted therapies in advanced colorectal cancer.
Dr Khan has presented at international conferences and published extensively in high-impact journals such as Science, Cancer Discovery, and the British Medical Journal (BMJ). He is also an active member of the National Research and Ethics Committee and contributes to the educational development of junior doctors by writing questions for MRCP(UK) and Medical Oncology exams.
