Dr Joseph Davar is a Consultant Cardiologist at The Royal Free Hospital, The Wellington Hospital, and the Hospital of St John's & St Elizabeth's. With over 30 years of experience in cardiology, he is also an honorary Associate Professor at UCL. Dr Davar specialises in the non-invasive diagnosis and assessment of coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, and cardiomyopathies, including those induced by chemotherapy.
Dr Davar has played a pivotal role in organising and leading several specialised services at the Royal Free Hospital, including the Cardiac Investigations Unit, Heart Failure Service, Chemotherapy Induced Heart Failure Clinic, and Hypertension Clinic. He is also the lead for the Valve Heart Disease and Carcinoid Heart Disease Services, as well as the Cardiac CT Service.
His earlier training was completed in Tbilisi and Moscow, where he was awarded the A.L Myasnikov Prize in 1984 for his book "Mitral Valve Prolapse". He further honed his expertise at The Brompton Hospital before taking up his current post at the Royal Free Hospital. Dr Davar is the Lead Clinician for Valvular Heart Disease, Carcinoid Heart Disease, and Imaging, including Stress Echocardiography and CT Coronary Angiography.
Dr Davar is highly active in clinical research and teaching. His interests include the non-invasive diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease, echocardiography, stress echo, and CT coronary angiography. He has performed tens of thousands of echocardiography procedures, up to 25,000 stress echo procedures, and several thousand CT coronary angiography procedures. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and regularly lectures at both national and international levels.
In 2017, Dr Davar led the development of the first international guidelines in Carcinoid Heart Disease, published in JACC. He was awarded a research grant by the British Heart Foundation and was elected an International Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 2011.
