    Dr John Gerard Coghlan, known as Dr Gerry Coghlan, is a distinguished Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital and the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth. Specialising in general and interventional cardiology, he has a profound clinical interest in heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and arrhythmias. Dr Coghlan studied medicine at University College Dublin and further specialised in cardiology at the National Cardiac Centre in Dublin, Harefield Hospital, and The Royal Free Hospital.

    Appointed as a consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital in 1997, Dr Coghlan is a founding member of the National Pulmonary Hypertension Physicians Association. He has significantly contributed to the development of the Royal Free National Pulmonary Hypertension Service, with a particular focus on connective tissue disease-associated pulmonary hypertension.

    Dr Coghlan has pioneered an 'outreach' model for pulmonary hypertension care, attending clinics at several hospitals including Guys & St Thomas' Hospital and Kings College Hospital. In 1999, he became the clinical lead in cardiology with the Regional Health Authority and led the North Central Sector collaborative program from 2002 to 2004. He also served as the medical chair of the North Central Sector Cardiac Network from 2004 to 2013.

    In 2001, Dr Coghlan was appointed Head of Service for medical specialties at the Royal Free Hospital, and later became the clinical director of acute medical specialties in 2004. He served as Deputy Director for medical specialties from 2005 to 2009. Currently, he leads a group to coordinate pulmonary hypertension services and research across four hospitals linked to UCL and is the cardiology lead for the BAMS course at the Royal Free Site. He also holds the position of governance lead for the Cardiology Service at the Royal Free Hospital.

    Dr Coghlan has published over 100 papers and has been involved in multinational studies. His research interests include pulmonary hypertension, cardiac imaging, and ischaemic heart disease. He is proficient in various procedures such as right heart catheterisation, pulmonary angiography, vasodilator testing, cardiac catheterisation, coronary angioplasty, stenting, pacemaker implantation, cardioversion, and endomyocardial biopsy.
