Mr Deepak Hariharan is a Consultant General and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgeon at The Royal London Hospital, which is part of Barts Health NHS Trust, where he has been working since 2018. He treats all benign and malignant conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas. His specialist interests are in gallstone disease, primary cancers of the liver, colorectal liver metastases and other secondaries to liver, gallbladder and bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer, solid and cystic tumours of pancreas, pancreatitis, laparoscopic surgery, abdominal wall hernias and groin hernias.
Born in Bangalore, India, Mr Hariharan qualified in medicine in 2001 from the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, India. He moved to the UK in 2002 to pursue postgraduate surgical training. He was awarded MD (Research) degree in 2008 on his work in potential biomarkers of pancreas cancer in urine using proteomic strategies from the Queen Mary University of London. He undertook Specialty General and HPB surgery training in the East Midlands at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK. He completed the FRCS exit examination in 2014 and was awarded Certificate of Completion of Training in 2016. He undertook subspecialty HPB surgery fellowships at HPB units at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK, Royal London Hospital, London, UK and Verona, Italy a dedicated and renowned Pancreas Cancer Centre.
Mr Hariharan’s clinical research interest is in facilitating early diagnosis and treatment of HPB cancers. It was his seminal paper that established urinary proteomics as a strategy for investigation of biomarkers for pancreas cancer. He helped establish enhanced recovery programme after HPB cancer surgery to advance postoperative care. He was also instrumental in setting up the Hot Cholecystectomy Pathway to facilitate early gallbladder surgery for suitable cases presenting as an emergency. In September 2019, his research group received a grant of £1.6M from Pancreas Cancer Research Fund for a clinical study to validate the accuracy and reliability of a urine test in detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage.
Mr Hariharan has many peer-reviewed publications and has presented on HPB and General Surgery in multiple national and international conferences. He is also a tutor and mentor to undergraduate, post-graduate trainees and nurses. He is experienced in developing high performing surgical teams to improve quality of surgical care and enhance patient experience.
