About Prof. Brian Davidson

Prof. Brian Davidson is a consultant in HPB and liver transplant surgery based at the Royal Free Hospital. He is also a professor of surgery and head of surgical research at University College London (UCL). He has a particular interest in liver, biliary tract, and pancreatic surgery, as well as the management of cancer.
Prof. Davidson graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1985, before completing specialist training in HPB and liver transplant surgery. He has been working at UCL and the Royal Free Hospital for over 20 years. He has been instrumental in the development of the HPB and liver transplant surgical unit at the Royal Free Hospital. In 1997, he was promoted to a personal chair in surgery at UCL at the age of 39, making him the youngest UK professor of surgery at the time.
At UCL, Prof. Davidson has established a research programme investigating HPB disease with numerous UK collaborators. This has led to the development of a highly successful research team that has published over 420 peer-reviewed papers. He also has a keen interest in clinical trials and evidence-based healthcare, having published and lectured extensively on these topics.
Prof. Davidson is actively involved in training and has authored over 22 textbook chapters. He has supervised 34 successful higher degrees (PhD/MD) and trained a large cohort of HPB and liver transplant surgeons.
He serves as an advisor to NICE, the Healthcare Commission, and the National Cancer Peer Review programme. He chairs the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) London grant funding panel for Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB). Additionally, he is a UK editor for the UK Cochrane Group, director of the London editorial base for the HPB group, and course director for the UCL MSc in Evidence-Based Healthcare.
