Dr Andrew Raffles is a highly esteemed Consultant Paediatrician with over three decades of experience in the field. He began his medical journey after qualifying from the University of London in 1978. Dr Raffles initially trained in Paediatrics at the Children's Hospital in Hackney Road, part of the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. He further honed his skills in Clinical Paediatrics at the Hammersmith Hospital, an internationally renowned centre for Newborn Medicine and Neuromuscular Diseases.
In 1984, Dr Raffles was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Paediatrics, which allowed him to gain international experience at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Sydney, Australia. His work there earned him awards for his research and teaching, particularly in preschool childhood asthma and newborn nutrition. By 1989, he had taken on the role of Consultant Paediatrician at the Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Welwyn Garden City.
During his tenure at East and North Herts NHS Trust, Dr Raffles served as the Clinical Director of Children's Services and Director of Diabetes Services for Children and Young People. He was also the Lead Paediatrician at the Birth Unit of St John and St Elizabeth in St John's Wood, collaborating closely with the Obstetric and Midwifery Team. His contributions to paediatric care include several published papers on neonatal nutrition and childhood asthma, as well as co-authoring books for parents on baby care.
Since 2016, Dr Raffles has been the Head of Children's and Young Peoples Services at Dr Ian Hay Ltd, a group of eight Consultant Paediatricians providing private healthcare. He continues to be actively involved in diabetes care as a Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Peer Reviewer of Diabetes Services for Children and Young People. His areas of expertise include general paediatrics, newborn care, childhood ailments, immunisations, and chronic long-term illnesses in adolescence.
