Mr Andrew Coombes is a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, appointed in 2003. He earned his MBBS from St Bartholomew’s Medical College in 1991, having previously completed a BSc in immunology at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1989. His NHS base is at the Royal London Hospital, where he leads the Adnexal service and the Cataract and Corneal service. He also serves as the College Tutor and Education Supervisor.

Mr Coombes has extensive subspecialty interests, including oculoplastic surgery, lacrimal surgery, and orbital surgery, with fellowships at Sydney Eye Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. He also specialises in cataract and corneal surgery, having completed a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His broad ophthalmic experience encompasses glaucoma, medical retina, uveitis, strabismus, paediatrics, and neuro-ophthalmology.

He has published widely in scientific journals and contributed to several books, particularly in the fields of cataract and trauma. Actively involved in teaching, he regularly lectures on ocular and orbital trauma. His clinical expertise includes procedures such as small incision phacoemulsification for cataracts, dacrocystorhinostomy for tear drainage, and cosmetic eyelid surgeries like blepharoplasty and brow lifts.

Mr Coombes treats a variety of conditions, including cataracts, dry eye, eyelid disorders, tear drainage issues, and orbital diseases. His comprehensive approach to patient care and his dedication to education make him a highly respected figure in the field of ophthalmology.
